The Ystradgynlais Public Band was formed in the nineteenth century. Our earliest photograph dates back to 1903 and the earliest surviving record shows the Band performing at Mountain Ash in 1899. There was a brief hiatus following the First World War, but the Band has played on continuously since 1924. Our oldest member, Rosslyn Morgan, joined the Band in 1936. His son and grandson both play in the Band as well. Another family that has a long history with the Band is the Whites. The Band was conducted by Tom White in the 1930s and later on his son Walter and grandson (also Walter) took over as conductor. Another of Tom's grandsons, Charles, still plays in the Band today.
Our members' ages range from 9 to 90 and there is a wide range of experience and ability as you would expect in a small town band. We enjoy a varied schedule, taking part in concerts, fetes and community events.
A few players from the training band have recently joined the main band, but we still have vacancies in all sections. Please get in touch with us if you would like to fill one of these empty chairs.
